Have you ever suffered from allergic rhinitis? Allergic rhinitis can be an extremely uncomfortable condition that affects your daily functioning, but there are several ways you can help yourself.
Don’t worry, you’re not alone; one in four people worldwide has a pollen allergy, one in eight is allergic to ragweed pollen, and in Croatia, 7 to 10% of the population suffers from pollen allergies.
What is it all about?
Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, occurs when your immune system overreacts to airborne allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander.
Symptoms of allergic rhinitis resemble those of a cold (link to the blog about the difference between allergies and colds) – sneezing, itchy nose, nasal congestion, red eyes, and runny nose.
Eye symptoms occur in 40-70% of patients.
Impact on Quality of Life
Allergic rhinitis can, to a greater or lesser extent:
- Reduce concentration
- Cause headaches, agitation, and fatigue due to its negative impact on sleep
- Affect work performance
- Lead to absenteeism from school
Additionally, the severity of allergic rhinitis symptoms can vary from year to year for reasons that are not yet fully understood, sometimes independent of pollen levels in the air. It is often associated with other upper respiratory conditions such as sinusitis, ear infections, or nasal polyps.
Main Types of Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis can be divided into:
- Intermittent: Symptoms occur less than 4 days a week and less than 4 weeks a year. It is associated with various outdoor allergens like grass, tree, and weed pollen.
- Persistent: Symptoms last more than 4 days a week and more than 4 weeks a year. It is most often caused by indoor allergens like dust mites, dust, mold, and pet dander, and is usually more severe in winter.
Are you a sneezer or a blocked-up type?
Allergic rhinitis can further be categorized as:
- Sneezers: Frequent sneezing attacks, always watery nasal discharge, often itchy nose, rarely nasal congestion, symptoms more pronounced upon waking with improvement during the day and worsening in the evening, often accompanied by eye issues.
- Blocked-up: Rare sneezing or none, infrequent nasal discharge but often mucus at the back of the throat, no nasal itching, usually severe nasal congestion, symptoms present throughout the day with nighttime worsening, rarely accompanied by eye issues.
Fortunately, there are several ways to help yourself with allergic rhinitis.
If you are struggling with allergic rhinitis, don’t feel helpless. Take steps to alleviate symptoms and improve your quality of life. Consult your doctor to find out which treatments or medications may be best for you and start relieving allergic rhinitis symptoms today.
What additional help lies in nature?
Numerous studies show the effectiveness of quercetin (link to the blog What is quercetin and how does it help with allergies?) as one of the strongest natural antihistamines (substances that reduce allergic reactions). Indian frankincense has also proven to be a useful addition in treating allergic asthma. Vitamins A, C, D, and zinccontribute to the normal function of the immune system.
