Did you know that one in four people worldwide has a pollen allergy? One in eight is allergic to ragweed pollen, while in Croatia, 7 to 10% of the population suffers from pollen allergies.
Anyone can develop allergies, regardless of age, gender, or social status. They are more common in developed countries, especially among urban populations.
Allergies act like a silent detective in our immune system. When we come into contact with certain substances, the body reacts, causing symptoms. But the question is: how?
What are Allergies?
Allergies are the result of an overreaction of the immune system to otherwise harmless substances known as allergens. When the body encounters an allergen, the immune system responds by producing antibodies, especially IgE antibodies, which trigger a chain reaction involving the release of histamine and other chemicals. This leads to the typical symptoms of an allergic reaction.
How to recognize Allergies?
Itchy skin, sneezing, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, watery nasal discharge; itching, swelling, tearing, and redness of the eyes; and throat scratching can be signs of an allergic reaction.
Common Types of Allergies Include:
- Respiratory Allergies: Hay fever, allergies to dust, mites, or pet dander.
- Food Allergies: Reactions to foods such as nuts, milk, eggs, or gluten.
- Skin Allergies: Contact dermatitis caused by exposure to irritating substances.
- Insect Sting Allergies: Reactions to stings from bees, wasps, mosquitoes, or ticks.
Identifying specific allergens is crucial for proper treatment.
Each type of allergy has its characteristics, but by understanding their causes and symptoms, we can manage them effectively. The variety of allergies should not discourage you; instead, use the knowledge.
What Can You Do to Prevent Pollen Allergy Symptoms?
- Monitor pollen forecasts and allergen movement in the city on the Pliva website (https://www.plivazdravlje.hr/alergije/prognoza).
- Choose days after rain for outdoor activities as pollen concentrations are lowest then; avoid sunny and windy days.
- Since pollen grains cling to hair, skin, and clothing, shower and change clothes after being outside to reduce allergen exposure.
- Rinse your nasal mucosa, preferably with sprays enriched with sea salt and/or ectoine.
- Use eye drops containing ectoine.
- Do not dry laundry outdoors during high pollen concentrations.
- Close windows during peak pollen times.
- Wear sunglasses and hats during the day.
- Brush and wash pets as they also collect pollen.
How to Treat Allergies?
Avoid and eliminate allergens as much as possible and apply preventive measures. For severe allergies, use medications prescribed by a doctor and consider dietary supplements with ingredients that have been proven to alleviate symptoms.
What additional help is found in nature?
Numerous studies demonstrate the effectiveness of quercetin as one of the strongest natural antihistamines (substances that reduce allergic reactions). Indian frankincense has also been shown to be a useful supplement in the treatment of allergic asthma. Vitamins A, C, D, and zinc contribute to the normal function of the immune system.
